It’s the thought that counts

Portraiture isn’t my specialty so this was a challenge. The initial idea I’d had was a full head with a ‘functioning’ mind. I wanted to show the process of thinking; the information going in, around and coming out. This piece reflects my dyslexia, showing my slower processing and how what I’m thinking often comes out differently. The ‘information’ or marbles in this case are dropped into the ‘mind’ (the dish), here they circle until they ‘form’ and drop out the mouth. At the point where they ‘form’ and drop, the ‘thought’ or marble changes. Inside the piece is a mechanism that stops one marble until another hits it, swapping positions. This means, if there is already a white marble in it and you put a blue marble in, the white one would come out.

A Piece of an Artist

‘A Piece of an Artist’ explores and examines the studio space of an artist, commenting on the layers of paint and marks made over time that record the process of making art. From a small space, the layers have been separated by colour onto ten separate ‘slides’. Each ‘slide’ is attached to the mechanism, which makes them move in an uncoordinated manner. This piece was never finished properly adding to the character and intrigue; a facination of movement.

Straw Art

Continuing to experiment with everyday materials, I played around with drinking straws. These are all entirely balanced, there was NO GLUE involved at all. This took a lot of patience as straws are quite light and are easy to blow over. the shapes they create are very geometric and natural. The curve from the straight lines of the straws took a while to get right but the effect is quite pleasing.
